Bournemouth Corporation bus
This 1956 shot taken with my trusty (sic) Brownie 127 features fleet No. 259 with registration NLJ 269. It’s a Leyland Royal Tiger PSU1/13 with Burlingham B41D bodywork which was renumbered as fleet No. 91 in1958 and subsequently, in 1960, lost its rear platform in 1960 when it was rebuilt to B42F.

A Dennis Loline with no ownership identification but possibly belonging to Reading Corporation at an Earls Court Commercial Motor Show. The single-decker next to it is a Bedford SB with a Strachans body. My thanks go to Maurice Bateman and Stuart Bell for dispelling my ignorance where non-LT material is concerned.

A newly painted Guy Arab but with no visible ownership markings. Neville Posnett has kindly investigated thie background to this image and informs us all as follows:
The bus is a Wolverhampton Corporation Guy Arab III with Park Royal 54 seat double deck body from the 539-560 batch (FJW539-560) built in 1949/50. It would have been freshly painted in the distinctive green/custard yellow colour. I believe it is standing in the entrance/exit to the Cleveland Road bodyshop where vehicles were overhauled.
Neville further states that Wolverhampton Transport's Guy Arab III's were unusual in having preselector gearboxes (assisting ex trolley bus drivers of the town) and also specified a sliding door for the driver.

"GRU 857 is Hants & Dorset 648, a 1947 Bristol L6G with Beadle coach body. It was converted for bus use (when the large bus-type destination indicator was fitted) in 1953 and was scrapped in 1959. Service 7 ran to Bournemouth via the Sandbanks Ferry, and although you can’t see it clearly on your photo, the lower body behind the rear axle would have been cut away slightly to reduce the risk of grounding on the ramp." It was taken by yours truly in August 1956 at a bus stop near Swanage Pier. Historical notes by Michael Wadman.

"The vehicle is probably an AEC Y-type; National had lots of these, some of which they bought new, some second-hand from the LGOC, and some were former WD chassis that they reconditioned and rebodied. However the same type of body and radiator was also fitted to some ex-WD Dennis chassis so it might be one of them." Historical background supplied by Michael Wadman.

Both vehicles are Leylands and depicted at Pool Valley, Brighton. The bus on the left, EUF 159, is a Park Royal H54R bodied Titan of 1937 vintage. The delightful veteran on the right, UF 4821, is a Brush-bodied Titan TD1 from 1929.

"It's Southern Vectis fleet number 404 and I took it in August 1955. "Southern Vectis 404 is DL 9014, a 1934 Dennis Ace with Harrington body. These vehicles were colloquially known as “Flying Pigs” for obvious reasons. When you photographed it in August 1955 it had already been withdrawn from service (in December 1954) and it was sold for use as a garden shed in February 1956." Historical notes by Michael Wadman.

Wilts and Dorset double-decker with registration JO 5401. I took this shot of fleet No. 441 in 1954 whilst it was working on route 9 to Alresford and it's probable that the location is Basingstoke. "JO 5401 was an AEC Regent with Brush body new to City of Oxford MS in 1932. It was acquired by Venture Ltd of Basingstoke in 1940, by which time it had been rebodied with a Park Royal body. In 1948 it was rebodied again, this time with a 1945 East Lancs body. Venture was by this time part of the Red & White group, which sold its bus interests to the BTC in 1950. Venture was put under the control of, and in 1951 taken over by, Wilts & Dorset, and JO 5401 became W&D 441. It was sold for scrap in November 1954, so you caught it in its last days." Historical background by Michael Wadman.

I used to have chapter and verse on this Bristol single-decker in Western National service but mislaid it. It's depicted here at what is arguably Torrington in 1964.
I used to have chapter and verse on this Bristol single-decker in Western National service but mislaid it. It's depicted here at what is arguably Torrington in 1964. "JUO 988 is Southern National 1223, a 1948 Bristol L6B which originally had a Beadle half-cab coach body. In 1958 the coach body was removed, the chassis lengthened, and it was fitted with the ECW full-front bus body shown in your photo. It was sold in 1969. Service 143 was a Bideford – Abbotsham – Westward Ho! – Bideford circular, so I’m afraid not Torrington." Historical and other comments by courtesy of Michael Wadman.
